I practice a form of Cognitive Therapy called Rational Emotive Therapy (RET) developed by Albert Ellis. This type of therapy encourages an individual to assess their interpretations of events and situations in their life in order to develop a more realist or rational understanding. Additionally, RET stresses developing emotional tolerance to events and situations that when even understood completely rationally, still bring the individual emotional discomfort.
Personally I believe most people arrive at my office complaining about their specific reactions to events and situations. For example, clients present in my office complaining of behaviors of addictions, angry outbursts, passivity, avoidance etc. In a therapist/client relationship, we will trace the undesirable reactions to the feelings/emotions causing them and then work further to better understand the interpretations of events and situations that cause the feelings. By adjusting the interpretations, we can affect the feelings and ultimately, the reactions that so often are the presenting complaint at intake of therapy.
My good-nature and compassion in the therapeutic process lead clients to report an increase in well-being and satisfaction in life and relationships.
